If the hair is very damaged, you can perform an Olaplex repair treatment. This treatment helps repair broken disulfide bonds caused by chemical services such as colouring, highlights, perming, and keratin treatments / relaxing, as well as everyday damage from heat styling with a blow-dryer, flat iron, curling iron, or sun exposure. A repair treatment can be offered as a stand-alone service or as an add-on to a haircut. If combined with a haircut, the treatment is carried out after the cut.
In the salon, I use the Olaplex Stand-Alone Treatment with No. 1 and No. 2, but you can also work with a plex or bond perfector from the brand you use. Do check whether it contains ingredients that do not fit within the Curly Girl Method, so you can explain this clearly to the client.
What you need
- Wash basin
- Towel over the shoulders
- Shower cap
- (Warm) towel / hood dryer / heat cap / hair steamer
- Clarifying shampoo
- Olaplex No. 1 & Olaplex No. 2 or a similar product
How I perform a repair treatment
Make sure my instructions match the directions for use of the product you are working with.
- Wash the scalp and hair with a foaming shampoo, preferably a clarifying shampoo
- Clean hair allows the product to absorb better
- Rinse the shampoo out thoroughly and gently squeeze the excess water from the hair
- Towel-dry the hair
- Too much water in the hair dilutes the treatment and reduces its effectiveness
- Mix 15 ml of Olaplex No. 1 with 90 ml of water in an applicator bottle
- Apply the mixture from the roots to the ends
- Press the product into the hair, section by section
- Leave on for 5 minutes (do not rinse)
- Apply Olaplex No. 2 to your hands
- Work Olaplex No. 2 through the hair by sliding the hair between both hands
- Start at the mid-lengths and work towards the ends
- Leave the mixture on for 15 minutes
- Keep the hair warm and damp while it processes by:
- putting on a shower cap with a towel over it
- putting on a shower cap while the client sits under a hood dryer / Climazon
- Rinse the hair thoroughly
- Then follow the full routine from washing through to scrunch out the crunch
